Essay

For this Essay I am reflecting on my Life Drawing work and comparing and contrasting to other artist who I was inspired from.

Week 1
On my blog I had reflected on my work from the Tableaux I write
"looking back at the architectural drawings i could have done more, like using different media instead of just pens. This was brought up during lesson when we there critiquing peoples work.
the tableaux drawing turned out better than i hoped mainly because i had a short time to draw all of it out and i didn't think about using other processes because i was rushing it out and making quick marks. i chose to do it in permanent marker because it was bulky and can get more on then just pen. And worked better."
During Week one I was being critiqued on work that we did during the Christmas holiday in preparation for Semester 2, my work was all in the same media primarily pens and looked rushed. This was do to having to draw them at the last minute during the holiday. And when I looked at what other people did, I felt mine was nowhere near as good as everyone else's. As everyone's used different media and looked like they spent time on them.  How I should improve on this would be to spend more time on it and used different media.

Week 2
During week 2 we worked on life drawing again and working from a life model looking at close ups of the heads and face on the blog I reflected about what I did.
this lesson was a lot more difficult than most lessons because of the hands and i have to draw as i have difficulty drawing hands. But when i got to drawing in my sketchbook i got better at it. The facial portraits where good but i need to speed up on some of them. Especially the first sketches.
Life drawing is difficult especially close  ups and definitely the hands. Drawing the hands was the more difficult bit because of how the hands are structured and positioned at first I tried drawing it using a esel but that didn't turn out at good mainly because trying to draw the hands has structures didn't work so after the 4th attempt I sat down and drew it in my sketchbook which turned out much better than I thought I also tried using green and brown pastels to represent shading which helped out a lot.

Ithe other weeks that followed we started adding different elements to the life drawing for example, adding skeletons (week 3), and adding animals (week 4)

during week 3 we was working with a skeleton and making the skeleton and the life model interact through the drawings and creating a story element with the drawings. Using different media and mostly working white on black and that helped to create atmosphere with the drawings. And as independent study I was tasked to do dusk drawings for that I incorporated what I learned during the lesson using white on black. Which worked better than the life drawings from the lesson in creating an atmosphere. Especially the third and fourth drawings. During the lesson we worked with wax and applied watered down ink over the top this was one of my favourites because of how well it turned out and the method itself worked tremendously well. All the rest of the works was charcoal based. Personally I liked the last two out of the rest, the Dark Gothic drawing and the 'White and Black Charcoal drawing of Model and Skeleton' because of how contrasting they are, and how dark they are in terms of the drawing and the context.

Week 4 we worked with stuffed animals from the local gallery. With the animals we created a space for the model to be in. At the beginning of the lesson we made rubbing of different surfaces for later. But after we used them for college works and using the rubbings as textures. I was not really fond of this one as much because of the college aspect of this one. The independent work was a bit better than the lesson work. Because I had a bit of I better understanding of how they can be interpreted in a way. I also used charcoal and pencils to create the drawings. In the drawings  I tried to create space around the model and some environments.

Week 5 we looked more into three dimensional drawing and how we can make the model stand out more on the paper. First we did a continuous line panorama of the room, so we drew what we see including other people and easels and the dimensions of the room. And the end result of those images looked really good and they looked abstract in a way. After that we began working on the life model. Using dull brown paper we could work black and white in to the pieces. After finishing them and looking at the results of the drawings  they turned out well the background works really well with the drawings and really brings them out. For my independent study I tried to replicate what I had done in class but I don't think they were that good compared to the other works I have done. Felt like the charcoal drawing could have done more work. And could have been more defined.

In Week 6 we looked at movement and the ability to memorized positions and poses some of the drawings there very quick, the trick was he needed to quickly draw the poses, and then build on top off them then the cycle repeated. It was difficult to do but when you start drawing it for a bit you sort of click into it.

In week 7 it was the last life drawing lesson, it was mainly I did two extended drawings and also a overlapped drawing and some quick sketch works for the two extended drawings in charcoal in the time I managed to draw them I also drew backgrounds and a thumbnail. I felt that I did the best in this lesson because of the amount I did for the two drawings but also of the detail I managed to put in. But the overlapped drawing could have been improved however. Looking back at the drawing itself I feel like it could have been bolder in some places and the positioning of the drawing could have been better thought out.

week 8 was location drawing put the main task was to walk along the Worcester riverside and draw the environments but also adding other elements and objects in to the drawings. Most of my drawings where of the river and one of the cathedral they were very quick drawings. And very sketchy, his could of improved if I spent more time on them. And also the things I added to the images there mainly trees. Because I didn't find anything that could match with the setting or the atmosphere of the drawings.

Week 9 was another location drawing but it was at the hive instead of a sketchbook we made a Maze book. Which is a book where it can be opened at different directions. In the lesson we drew anything that looked good, like stairwells and environments. Most of my drawings where pens and also I added colour some of the drawings there good even though they were quick drawings.  And some I tried to shad using the colours to represent hot and cold. The only problems I had with the drawings was the last drawings as I felt like I rushed them.

Paul Hogarth

For week 8's task we used Paul Hogarth as a inspiration for the task. With how Hogarth used other surrounding objects in this drawings, I also admire the way he draws sketchley but looks so detailed. The image that was on the blog, Victorian Cemetery, Cambridge, England was of a cemetery with people and trees added in to the drawing, the way he drew the people and the trees works well as a composition.  Which was something I wanted to reflect in my drawings. Creating the drawings quickly and adding objects to create composition.
